The Elwood Fire Protection District was formed in 1965 and ran by volunteers to provide emergency services for its residents. In 1994, the residents passed a referendum to provide full-time emergency medical services.
The fire district is overseen by a three (3) member board of Trustees which meets monthly.
We have one (1) fire station located at 309 W. Mississippi Street in Elwood Illinois.
We are approximately 50 miles south of Chicago in Will County and exist as a separate entity from the Village of Elwood. Although our 42 square mile fire district is home to approximately 5,000 residents, we also protect our daily work population of approximately 20,000. Additionally, we are part of the MABAS 15 Division and provide mutual aid to the 20 communities within the division as well as neighboring communities and MABAS divisions.
All shift personnel are certified firefighters and emergency medical technicians (basics or paramedics). The crew responds to approximately 1200 fire, emergency medical, hazardous materials, technical rescue, citizen assistance, and mutual aid calls per year. We make every effort to maintain a responsive and well-trained staff advocating for every citizen in their time of need with honor and courage.
